March News from Smithfield

Tax Bills Out Now

Property owners began receiving their municipal tax bills on March 1st. Note that this tax bill includes county, library, township, fire, and EMS taxes only. School tax bills will be sent out in August.

We have continued our tax insert program and included additional information on happenings in Smithfield. Key highlights are:

• No increase in county, library, township, fire or EMS taxes for 2026
• Several public events, including: educational/interpretive hikes, Hop and Hunt, Trunk or Treat & Fall Fest
• Improvements to Minisink Park, Marshalls Falls Park, and River’s Edge Bike Park
• Continued resurfacing and maintenance of our roadways
• Onboarded several new volunteers for community boards

Spring Clean Up will be held Wednesday, April 29th through Saturday, May 2nd from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Municipal Center.

More details will be available shortly, but please remember you must bring proof of residency. Hazardous waste is not permitted.

Hop and Hunt Coming Up!

Join us on Saturday, April 4th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Waterfront Park for Smithfield Township’s Hop & Hunt! The rain date is Sunday, April 5th.

There will be 3 egg hunts:
Ages 0-3 at 2pm
Ages 4-7 at 2:15pm
Age 8 & up at 2:30pm

Bring your own basket!

We will also have photos with the Easter Bunny, crafts, balloon tying, and light refreshments. We hope to see you there!

EAC Update: Clean Water Action

The Smithfield Township Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) recently collaborated with the Township to send a letter to the PA DEP regarding the Manwalamink Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) with sewage effluent discharge into Brodhead Creek.

In the letter, the EAC commented on its concerns, these included requesting that the PA DEP require chlorine, which is acutely toxic to aquatic life, to be phased out as the disinfectant, and that UV treatment or de-chlorination be fully implemented. The EAC also commented on recommending upgrades using best available technologies and expressed concerns over impacts to endangered aquatic species in the vicinity.

The EAC has requested that the PA DEP hold a public hearing. The EAC will update the community if the PA DEP grants this request.

Reminder: On Saturday, March 28th, at 11:00 AM, the Environmental Advisory Council will host the famous Mount Nebo Park interpretive hike. This is the perfect season, before the leaves come out, to see the scenic views over the Shawnee Creek and Marshalls Creek sub-watersheds.

2026 Beekeeping at Waterfront Park

If you are a resident who cannot currently keep bees at your residence, this is an opportunity to do so in the Township apiary at our Community Garden.

We still have six spots available for residents to keep bees for the 2026 beekeeping season. Please note that beekeepers must provide their own bees and equipment at their own expense.
