EAC Update: Volunteers Wanted
Help Launch A Bird Town PA Committee
On June 16, the Environmental Advisory Council welcomed Philip Witmer from Bird Town PA. The Township is exploring whether to become an officially recognized Bird Town Pennsylvania community. Bird Town PA is a statewide program that has worked with local municipalities for over 10 years to create healthier, more sustainable places for birds, wildlife, and people.
To get started, we’re looking for 3 to 5 Township residents to form our local Bird Town Committee. The committee would plan and run local activities such as bird walks, tabling events, and tracking our progress for the program each year. The time commitment is light: a few local planning meetings, birdwatching event, tabling, plus a couple of virtual statewide gatherings a year. No special background is needed, just time, dedication, and passion in birds and their habitat.
If you’d like to be part of it, or would like more information, contact Dr. Alex Jackson at alex@smithfieldtownship.com

America250 Independence Day Parade
Celebrate our Nation’s 250th Birthday with your friends and neighbors.
The Semiquincentennial Parade is one of the area’s featured Independence Day events and promises a festive salute to the nation’s past, present, and future.
The parade will start at Stroudsburg High School and travel along Main Street through downtown Stroudsburg, turning at Third St. and McConnell to cross the bridge into East Stroudsburg, and continue up Washington Street, concluding at Dansbury Park.
The parade will feature patriotic floats, marching bands, miniature horses, fire trucks, community organizations, and other attractions celebrating America’s 250th anniversary. Residents and visitors are encouraged to line the parade route and enjoy a morning of patriotic music, community pride, and family-friendly entertainment.
Organizers invite families, friends, and visitors from throughout the region to attend and take part in this historic celebration. Spectators are encouraged to arrive early to secure a viewing spot along the route.

Fireworks Safety Information
As we celebrate Independence Day, Smithfield Township encourages everyone to enjoy fireworks safely and responsibly. Pennsylvania law allows adults 18 and older to purchase and use consumer fireworks, but there are important restrictions. Fireworks may not be discharged:
-
Within 150 feet of an occupied structure.
-
On public or private property without the owner’s permission.
-
From or toward a vehicle or building.
-
While under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Please remember that fireworks are not permitted in any Smithfield Township park. This prohibition helps protect our parks, reduces the risk of fires, and keeps our public spaces safe for everyone.
If you choose to use consumer fireworks where they are legally permitted, follow these safety tips:
-
Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
-
Light one firework at a time and move away quickly.
-
Never attempt to relight a malfunctioning firework.
-
Keep children and pets a safe distance away.
-
Soak used fireworks in water before disposing of them.
By following Pennsylvania law and using common sense, we can all enjoy a safe and memorable holiday weekend.
