EAC Update: Clean Water Remains Our Top Priority
The Smithfield Township Environmental Advisory Council (EAC) has been hard at work advancing the issues that matter most to our residents, like water quality concerns (sewage, stormwater, PFAS/forever chemicals), conservation and ecosystem management, sustainable practices and public education, evaluating Township matters through an ecological lens, and preserving peace, quiet, natural beauty, and scenic viewsheds.

Importantly, on November 6, 2025, the PA Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) held a public hearing on the East Stroudsburg Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) sewage effluent discharge into Brodhead Creek. The EAC participated and asked that the PA DEP require that chlorine, which is acutely toxic to aquatic life, be phased out as the disinfectant and that UV treatment be fully implemented as the sole disinfection method during this permit cycle. The EAC also requested other upgrades in water quality monitoring, such as summer temperature monitoring upstream and downstream of the effluent discharge, as well as yearly macroinvertebrate sampling.

On Saturday, January 17th, the EAC hosts its next educational interpretive hike, this time at the famous Mount Minsi trailhead; on Saturday, March 28th will be the educational interpretive hike at Mount Nebo Park; the Township will also soon launch of the full calendar of events for the year, which will include EAC hosted programs.
