The Township Maintenance & Road Department paves and maintains all township roadways. On occasion, these services are contracted out based on project size and available resources. Smithfield and Middle Smithfield Townships often coordinate to finish projects together. The Township road crew also maintains all township equipment, including that at our parks. During winter or other storm events, the crew also clears roadways for safe and necessary travel.
Smithfield Township’s Leaf Collection Program is conducted for four to five weeks in mid-April to mid-May and in mid-October to mid-November. Once an area has received its leaf collection, it is incumbent upon the resident to remove any residual leaf piles.
Do not rake twigs, branches, walnuts, apples, sticks, rocks, bottles, garden debris, etc. with the leaves: such items cause equipment to breakdown.
Guidelines for bulk leaf piles:
Landscapers and Garden Services: It is illegal to dump loads of leaves on Township streets. Any contractor caught dumping leaves will be subject to a fine for illegal dumping on Township right-of-way.
Residents are encouraged to mulch and/or compost leaves.
Smithfield Township Clean-Up enables residents to safely dispose of household waste at a low cost. Clean-Up dates and fees are advertised yearly.

Smithfield Township’s Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance (Ordinance No. 217) requires all residents to use the services of an authorized collector for waste collection. Recycling in Smithfield Township is mandatory.
Smithfield Township does not provide for residential or commercial trash or recycling collection — however, there are many private haulers to choose from. The Monroe County Waste Authority offers a list of public haulers in Monroe County.
Learn more at The Waste Authority website.
Residents and commercial establishments must keep all recyclables separate from trash and leaf waste so authorized waste collectors can remit them to recycling facilities. Recyclables shall not be mixed with waste or leaf waste for collection, removal, or disposal. Make sure to check with your individual hauler for what can and cannot be recycled. This is a mandatory recycling program; you are required by Township Ordinance No. 217 to recycle.
Retail businesses may have different recycling needs than other commercial establishments. For information on retail recycling, see the Successful Recycling in Retail Operations fact sheet.
If you would prefer to drop-off recyclables, the Monroe County Municipal Waste Management Authority operates two recycling drop-off sites in the county. Residents may drop off their recyclables at one of two sites:
