EAC in October: Recommendations & Garden Update

Recommends Action on Single-Use Plastics & Timber Harvesting

At its September meeting, the Smithfield Township Environmental Advisory Council unanimously voted to recommend that the Township continue exploring a single-use plastics ordinance.

Microplastics have become an increasing environmental concern. Research cited by the EAC has found microplastic contamination in Pennsylvania waterways, including both the Delaware River and remote headwater streams.

The EAC also recommended that the Board of Supervisors consider a timber harvesting ordinance. Properly managed forestry can benefit forests and water quality, but logging activity can also accelerate erosion and sedimentation when appropriate safeguards are not followed. A local ordinance could establish notification and planning requirements for timber harvests and provide clearer accountability when problems occur.

Community Garden Plot Update

The EAC’s plot at the Smithfield Township Community Garden had quite a growing season!

The photos above show the garden near the beginning of the season and later in the summer, when the tomato plants were loaded with fruit. The plot received no artificial fertilizer — just sun, water, weeding and plenty of time and effort.

With another growing season ahead in 2027, residents interested in participating should keep an eye out for registration information. Garden plots can go quickly! October EAC Newsletter Content
