February News from Smithfield

Looking Back at 2024 & Looking Ahead in 2025

2024 was a big year for Smithfield Township. 2025 promises to be even bigger. The Township staff summed up achievements for 2024, plans for 2025, and an explanation of local taxes. The below report will be included in the tax bill you will receive in March.

Key highlights include:

  • No Tax Increase for Smithfield Township: Municipal (1.96 mills), Fire (.55 mills), and EMS (.30 mills) tax rates remain unchanged for 2025. Monroe County taxes increased from 3.9773 mills to 5.4773 mills.

  • Parks & Recreation: Exciting projects include the second phase of Marshalls Falls Park and the Vision Loss Trail at Waterfront Wellness Park.

  • Infrastructure Improvements: The Green Light Go grant will automate traffic signals on the Route 209 Corridor, improving safety and traffic flow.

  • Public Safety: Over $500,000 allocated to fire and EMS providers, along with continued grant support.

  • Public Works Efficiency: Major paving projects planned for River Rd, Carillon Dr, and more.

New Zoning/Codes Enforcement Officer

On January 6, 2025, the Board of Supervisors hired Bureau Veritas to serve as Zoning/Codes Enforcement Officer. The Board is excited to work with Bureau Veritas, allowing for better enforcement of codes and more efficient permit review and issuance.

Our primary contact will be Matthew Helbers. Starting February 6th, Zoning/Codes open office hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m on Thursdays.

Municipal Center Holiday Closure

The Municipal Center will be closed on Monday, February 17th in observance of Presidents’ Day. It will reopen on Tuesday, February 18th.

“Bells Across PA” Art Contest

Calling all artists! Monroe County invites creative minds to design a Liberty Bell replica for America250PA’s “Bells Across PA” art series, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. The chosen artist will receive a $1,250 honorarium to adorn a three-foot fiberglass bell showcasing Monroe County’s heritage.

Sponsored by the Pocono Mountains Visitors Bureau, the bell will be displayed during the 2026 celebration. Applications are due April 1, 2025. Learn more at the America250PA website or contact MC250PA Chairman David Parker at 570-656-9232. Let your creativity ring for history!

Last Chance for River’s Edge Bike Park Survey!

The River’s Edge Bike Park is located at 123 River Road in Smithfield Township (between the Minisink Hotel and Minisink Park) and is maintained by both Smithfield and Middle Smithfield Townships. The existing park consists of a bike pump track, disc golf course, and natural trails throughout.

Smithfield and Middle Smithfield Townships received a grant to develop a Master Plan for future development of the park. Part of that Master Plan includes surveying the public. Please complete the below survey to aid in the development of the Master Site Plan.
